"We now have visibility of the vehicle-level DVP&R, we can trust the data, and view it all in the way we need to"

Chief Engineer, EV scale-up

The mission:

Restore and maintain confidence in EBoM and MboM accuracy in the face of rapidly changing processes, ensuring part maturity visible, parts releasable, and vehicle configuration correct.

PDM in action: release and change management support

A US EV Start-up faced challenges maintaining control over their EBoM & MBoM through rapidly changing processes. These challenges resulted in:

  1. Engineers being unable to release their parts for upcoming builds.
  2. BoM errors such as missing or duplicate parts.
  3. Poor visibility to part maturity.
  4. Incorrect vehicle configuration in 3DX.

The resulting lack of confidence in BoM accuracy consistently caused prototype builds to be delayed.

This has been an on-going deployment of 18 QRians over the last five years as the organization transitioned from a start-up to scale-up.

QR_'s approach and impact

Product Data Management:

  1. First line of defense in data quality.
  2. Advisory support for engineering teams through all aspects of the release process.
  3. Catch, correct, and implement solutions to EBoM issues before they impact the vehicle line.
  4. Identify areas for process improvements to increase the speed and quality of releasing.
  5. Communicate changes to maintain alignment through downstream systems.

Configuration specialists and pre-release BoM management:

  1. Maintain configuration models to translate Product Plan into usable format.
  2. Action changes to product definition by translating impacts to affected BoMs.
  3. Manage vehicle complexity in PLM system (customer options, market-specific demands, and regulatory, etc.)
  4. Create documentation on new processes for team members.
  5. Initial BoM Structuring to meet PLM standards.
  6. Visualize clash checks more clearly and understand the impact of cross-functional changes.
